Concept of Military Sand Tables
Traditional military sand tables are divided into temporary sand tables and permanent sand tables. Temporary sand tables are built with sand and wargaming models directly on-site, while permanent sand tables are made from foam boards, plywood, plaster, or pulp, which can be preserved for long periods. Sand tables have always been valued for their strong 3D visualization, intuitive presentation, simple production, cost-effectiveness, and practicality.
With the advancement of digital technology, both the presentation forms and functions of sand tables have evolved. Traditional physical sand table models can display comprehensive and detailed information, but they are time-consuming to produce, cannot be easily modified, and lack flexibility in reuse. In contrast, today’s electronic sand tables inherit the advantages of traditional sand tables while overcoming their limitations: they deliver vivid, dynamic display effects, allow content updates at any time, support secondary development, and even enable real-time interactive operations and command applications.
LCD Touchscreen Technology for Electronic Sand Tables
Large-format LCD splicing screens and oversized LCD touchscreens have become the preferred hardware solutions for electronic sand table displays.
LCD splicing screens offer virtually unlimited scalability, making it possible to create electronic sand tables of any size. Although splicing screens lack native touch capability, this can be solved by adding an external infrared touch frame with tempered glass, enabling multi-touch functionality. Touch sensitivity remains high and unaffected by the increased surface area. However, splicing displays have two major drawbacks:
Color deviation, which remains a technical bottleneck.
Seams between panels, which disrupt the visual experience.
For instance, instead of using a 2x2 splicing setup with four 55-inch screens, many clients prefer a 98-inch all-in-one interactive touchscreen display, which provides seamless viewing, integrated touch functionality, and a true large-format experience without panel seams.
